Natalie Assmann (*1988, she/her), is a freelance artist, director, theatremaker, and curator whose predominantly collaborative practice spans interdisciplinary performance, stage-based play development, and hybrid festival formats. Raised in Linz on the Danube and in the theatre, she explores queer-feminist counter-narratives, posthumanist concepts, and antifascist storytelling within and beyond artistic production.

Following numerous engagements as a performer and actress, Assmann served as co-director and co-curator of WIENWOCHE – Festival for Art & Activism (2019/2020). Her projects have been presented at Schauspiel Köln, brut Wien, Impulse Theater Festival NRW, CTM Festival Berlin, Volksbühne am Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz, or S_P_I_T – Queer Performance Festival at Tanzquartier Vienna. With the play development Justitia!_Identity_Cases initiated by Gin Müller, the team was nominated for the Nestroy Prize for Best Off-Theatre Production 2023. The production City of Whores in cooperation with Red Edition - migrant sex workers group, on the criminalization of sex workers and the strategies of empowerment received second prize of the Independent Arts Scene Vienna (2023). The collective Erzebét Szabó, which Assmann was part of, received the Lisa Fitko Prize at the International Schlepper & Schleuser Conference at the Münchner Kammerspiele for Refugee Konvoi (2016) an escape assistance operation, as well as the Ute Bock Prize for Civil Society Engagement. Assmann initiated the series TU FASCHO AUSTRIA at Volksbühne Berlin. Together with performance artist Denise Kottlett she founded the PAM PAM CLUB - queer Erotic Night Vienna at WUK performing arts in 2024.  

Most recently, Assmann co-curated the Wiener Kongresse 2025 – “Art and Abuse” for the Wiener Festwochen, contributing to the critical reappraisal of the crimes committed within the Friedrichshof commune. She was also active in the network surrounding the so-called “Donnerstags Demos”, an activist movement opposing the participation of right-wing extremists in the Austrian government. Together with Mir Raggam-Alji and Sophie Lingg, she curated the symposium Ecofeminist Practices in Art & Activism in October 2025, from which the initial impulses for DANUBE REQUIEM emerged. Assmann has been awarded the START Grant of the Austrian Federal Government as well as the Working Grant for Theatre and Performance of the City of Vienna. Her work has been featured in Missy Magazine, an.schläge, GRAU Magazine, 39NULL Magazin and other publications.

Assmann’s artistic language moves between queer, subcultural codes, feminist motifs of resistance and pain, as well as hyperrealistic imagery drawn from art history. She recasts these visual traditions through a feminist analysis of power, structural inequality, and the socio-political mechanisms that contribute to the hardening of authoritarian tendencies and the absence of empathy.
